BDC-Favelas platform, which provides access to remote sensing images of favelas, is featured in FAPESP News
The paper presented at the Workshop Computação Aplicada (WorCAP), titled “BDC-Favelas Explorer: A web portal for accessing and disseminating information about favelas based on Earth observation data” authored by Fabiana Z. Vieira, Gabriel Sansigolo, Flavia Feitosa, Miguel Monteiro, Karine Ferreira, and Gilberto Queiroz, was featured in a FAPESP News article.
The BDC-Favelas Explorer builds on technologies developed by the Brazil Data Cube project and was tested using drone data collected in the Jardim Zaíra and Vila Carlina areas in Mauá (São Paulo). The drone flights, coordinated by Isabel Escada and Sidnei Sant’Anna from INPE and CEFAVELA, validated the platform’s functionalities and helped define data processing and dissemination protocols. The system is expected to be publicly available by the end of 2026.
CEFAVELA is a Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Center (RIDC) funded by FAPESP, based at the Center for Engineering, Modeling, and Applied Social Sciences (CECS-UFABC), at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC) in São Bernardo do Campo. The lead author of the study, Fabiana Zioti Vieira, is a researcher at INPE and a FAPESP fellow.
