About BiomasBR
BiomasBR is a program of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) that provides official data to government agencies responsible for monitoring deforestation, vegetation fires, and land management, as well as to civil society for environmental compliance and verification.
Using remote sensing imagery from multiple satellite systems with different spatial and temporal resolutions, and methodologies tailored to the characteristics of each Brazilian biome, BiomasBR is responsible for the continuous development, operation, and improvement of monitoring systems for native vegetation suppression and land cover dynamics across Brazil’s biomes.
The program currently comprises the following systems:
Together, these systems produce maps that provide information on native vegetation suppression and regeneration, as well as land use and land cover across Brazil’s biomes. Their methodologies are continuously improved through scientific and technological advances and innovations developed in Brazil, ensuring the ongoing enhancement of biome monitoring.
The resulting datasets are openly available to society and support a wide range of users and applications. They play a key role in combating illegal deforestation and provide essential information for greenhouse gas emissions reporting related to deforestation and forest degradation, contributing to Brazil’s commitments under international environmental agreements.
